Here's a 5-minute check that catches 80% of WordPress maintenance problems before they become emergencies.

Log into your WordPress dashboard. Look at the top notification bar.

If it says "WordPress 6.X is available," that's an outdated core. If you see "10 plugin updates available," that's a vulnerability backlog. If you see neither — but you're paying $45–$150/month for "maintenance" — someone owes you an explanation.

A real maintenance plan updates your plugins on a weekly schedule. You should never see an update backlog if your maintenance company is doing the work.

A common WordPress problem we fix early in new customer relationships: their hosting company's "automatic backup" is on the same server as the site. That's not actually a backup — when the server has a problem (hack, disk failure, compromise), the backup goes with it. Off-site backups (on separate infrastructure) are the only kind that protects you when you actually need recovery. We backup to Backblaze B2 with 30-day retention for every customer.
