When Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina in September 2024, it ripped apart the backbone of the mountains.

• Nearly 12 miles of Interstate 40 were washed out or heavily damaged through the Pigeon River Gorge. 
• Across the state, about 5,000 miles of roads and hundreds of bridges were damaged. 
• The rebuild of I-40 alone is now expected to cost close to $2 billion, making it one of the largest highway repair projects in North Carolina history. 

I spent the day with engineers, operators, and crews doing the impossible in one of the most challenging terrains in the country stabilizing mountainsides, rebuilding highways, and reconnecting communities.
