In loving memory of my father.
I wanted to leave something lasting in his name, something that keeps giving on his behalf. BioNexus Hub is completely free for everyone.
I built it to make bioinformatics accessible to people changing careers, especially those coming from pharmacy and other non-CS backgrounds, the way I once did. Every person who learns through it, every career that changes because of it, I dedicate as Ψ΅Ψ―ΩΨ© Ψ¬Ψ§Ψ±ΩΨ© ΨΉΩΩ Ψ±ΩΨΩ β an ongoing charity for his soul.
If it helps you in any way, please remember him in your prayers.

β
Scored lesson checks β every quiz now adds up to a 70% pass mark so you know the ideas landed
β
Self-checking exercises β practice that tells you when your answer is correct
β
Real data, not just demos β a real E. coli run for variant calling and the real airway dataset for RNA-seq, end to end
Still 100% free, no account needed. π

The full BioNexus Hub roadmap is now live, beginner to advanced, and it is 100% free.
When we started, the goal was simple: a place to actually learn bioinformatics by doing, with no paywall and no gatekeeping. That roadmap is now complete, all the way from "I have never written a line of code" to research-level topics.
What is now open:
- Foundations: Python, R, and the command line, set up step by step
- Working with biological data: FASTA/FASTQ, file formats, Biopython, databases
- Genomics & NGS: quality control, trimming, alignment, samtools, and variant calling (FASTQ to VCF)
- Transcriptomics: a full RNA-seq differential expression workflow in R/DESeq2, volcano plots, heatmaps, and functional enrichment
- RNA biology & epitranscriptomics: RNA structure, CLIP-seq, and m6A, a deeper niche most beginner platforms never touch
- Statistics & visualization: what a p-value really means, the multiple-testing problem, and how to make figures that tell the truth
- Reproducibility & career: Git & GitHub, conda environments, building a portfolio, career paths, and a bench-to-keyboard transition playbook
Every lesson explains the jargon in plain language, most include auto-graded quizzes, several run real Python right in your browser, and the advanced lessons cite the actual research papers so you can trust what you are reading.
If you are switching into bioinformatics from pharmacy, the lab, the clinic, or another field, this was built for you.

π§ Tool Tuesday: UCSC Genome Browser
Want to see a genome instead of just reading about it? The UCSC Genome Browser lets you zoom from a whole chromosome down to a single base β with genes, variants, regulation, and conservation all stacked in neat, aligned tracks.
Why we love it for beginners:
𧬠100+ genomes (human, mouse & more) β nothing to install
π Visual, track-based view of the data
β
Point, click, explore β no coding required
π Try it free: genome.ucsc.edu

𧬠New on BioNexus Hub: two full hands-on tracks are now open!
If you are starting out in bioinformatics and want to actually DO the work (not just read about it), these are for you. Every lesson is free, beginner-friendly, and runs right in your browser. No installs, no setup headaches.
π¬ Track 2 β Genomics & Next-Gen Sequencing
Walk the classic NGS workflow one step at a time, from raw reads to called variants:
β’ How NGS works (a 20-minute primer)
β’ Quality control with FastQC
β’ Trimming and filtering reads
β’ Read alignment with BWA
β’ The samtools survival kit
β’ Variant calling capstone: FASTQ β VCF
𧫠Track 3 β Transcriptomics & RNA-seq
Learn the analysis that powers most modern papers, in R with DESeq2:
β’ The RNA-seq big picture
β’ Your first differential expression analysis
β’ Volcano and MA plots
β’ Heatmaps and clustering
β’ Functional enrichment
Every lesson explains the jargon in plain English, and there is a searchable Glossary if a term ever trips you up.

𧬠Before we go deeper into bioinformatics, letβs revisit a core concept in molecular biology: The Central Dogma
DNA β Transcription β RNA β Translation β Protein
This describes how genetic information flows inside cells. DNA stores the instructions, RNA carries those instructions, and proteins perform most biological functions.
π‘ Why is this important in bioinformatics?
Many datasets we analyze such as RNA-seq, gene expression profiles, and protein interaction networks are directly linked to this information flow.
π¬ It becomes even more interesting with RNA modifications like m6A and m5C. These chemical marks can influence RNA stability, localization, and translation without changing the DNA sequence. This regulatory layer is known as epitranscriptomics.
We will explore this exciting field together soon π

π§¬MOTIVATION MONDAYπ§¬
If you've ever stared at code that looks like hieroglyphics, or read the same paper paragraph five times without it clicking, this is for you.
The journey into bioinformatics isn't always smooth. There are days when the data doesn't make sense. Days when the papers feel like they're written in another language. Days when you wonder if you're cut out for this.
But here's the truth: struggling doesn't mean you're failing. It means you're learning.
Every bioinformatician, yes, even the ones whose work you admire, has been exactly where you are. Confused. Frustrated. Ready to close that laptop and walk away.
The difference? They kept going. And so can you.
At BioNexus Hub, we believe that learning is hard, but you don't have to do it alone. Whether you're transitioning from pharmacy, medicine, biology, or any other field, you belong in this space. Your unique perspective matters. Your effort matters.
You're doing better than you think. Keep going. We're here with you. π§¬β¨
What's something in bioinformatics that finally "clicked" for you after struggling with it? Share below. Your story might be exactly what someone else needs to hear today. π

π οΈ Tool Tuesday | FASTQC
𧬠Fun Fact Friday!
Only about 1.5% of the human genome codes for proteins.
The rest plays important regulatory roles β and bioinformatics is helping us uncover them.
Spoiler: Itβs NOT junk DNA π
