Families can save thousands of dollars a year. It's normal to feel frustrated and overwhelmed with the college application process, especially when the student is not clear on what they want to study. At College Flight Plan, we use online courses to give students simple action steps and success secrets that will help them develop a clear plan which saves money as they take off for college. WHY ARE ESSAYS SO IMPORTANT? Writing your college application essay is one of the most difficult, yet valuable, parts of the application process. Your well-crafted essays could be the deciding factors on whether you will be admitted to the top colleges on your list. Many applicants have good GPAs, great SAT or ACT scores, impressive extracurricular activities, and solid educational summer experiences, but universities cannot accept every qualified student who applies. They just don’t have the room. So as the competition gets more heated, the quality of the essays can determine the winners. The universities require essays because they want to learn more about you… your passions, interests, experiences, strengths, weaknesses, values, goals, and feelings. Your GPA, course load, and standardized test scores are not enough for the admissions team to make an informed decision as to why they should accept you. Each selection committee is looking for students who are uniquely qualified to add value to their university family. An ideal candidate is one who will hit the ground running, contribute positively to the school community, leave a glowing legacy on campus and go on to be a productive member of society who reflects well on the university. With memorable and compelling essays that showcase your distinct natural abilities, you have an excellent opportunity to convince the admissions team to choose you. This is your chance to shine!! Most of our students use the Common Application, and many submit additional applications to universities that do not accept the Common App. We advise you to write your Common App Personal Statement first. In many instances, you will be able to cut down your 650-word essay to fit another prompt from a school that does not accept the Common App. Also, you should NEVER use your Common App Personal Statement to answer a supplemental essay required by a school that DOES use the Common App. That would be repeating information that they already have seen. KNOW THE REQUIREMENTS! Once you start your Common App account, you can apply to any of the 700 schools that accept it. Those selection committees will read your 650-word Personal Statement chosen from a list of seven prompts. The Coalition Application schools, of which there are 130, require one essay of around 500 words, chosen from 5 prompts. Many of the more selective schools require supplemental essays and some only accept applications on their websites. For example, the University of California System only accepts applications on its website and will require four 350-word essays chosen from a list of 8 “Personal Insight” prompts. That’s a lot of writing! It’s important to be aware of each school's individual requirements. Also, the word limit is just that: the limit. Never go over the limit, but if you can answer the prompt with fewer words, by all means, do so.
