Most people think courage is about fearlessness. Ryan Berman argues it's something entirely different.

In the latest episode of Surfacing Leaders, I sat down with Ryan, founder of Courageous and author of Return on Courage, to explore why courage is actually a learnable skill and one of the greatest competitive advantages a leader can develop.

We unpack the difference between courage and recklessness, why clarity is the foundation of courageous leadership, and how leaders can create environments where people are willing to take smart risks, speak up, and grow.

One insight that really stuck with me: courage isn't about having all the answers. It's about having enough clarity and conviction to take the next step.

If you're leading through uncertainty, navigating change, or trying to build a stronger culture, this conversation is packed with practical takeaways you can put into action immediately.

For decades, organizations assumed leadership would develop on its own.

Put people in junior roles long enough. Let the repetition build instinct. Wait for them to earn bigger decisions.

That model had one requirement: a steady supply of entry-level roles where those reps could happen. That supply is now shrinking.

Leadership that used to develop slowly through years of incidental exposure now has to develop deliberately through structure. The organizations that understand this early are building something the others won't be able to buy later.

What does your deliberate leadership development system look like today?
