One year of martial arts, a pastime hobby of boxing with friends, and 16 years of defending myself against three older brothers I would like to think of myself as being somewhat well versed or at least a little above average when it comes to the sport of fighting.
But I just got through watching an UFC video in which the guy on top begins to subdue the opponent by driving punches and then choking him out. But what happened afterwards is what caught my attention. After the bottom man had been choked out, the victor of the fight caringly took out the mouth piece of the looser whom was half unconscious, and began hugging him the minute he stood up.
It had become apparent at that moment the state of humanity in the situation – WINNING. Was that it? Was that the point? It had been until that moment. I’m sure anybody witnessing the event would have felt a sudden shift in the atmosphere where as moments ago the objective was to win, and in just one second it was as if the reality of the situation broke through, and that “victory” to the man on top suddenly meant nothing.
I may be the only one to bite the bullet here and actually say it but bashing another guy’s face only to see which one comes out the victor is actually a bit inhumane. But it doesn’t stop there. The mentality is in everything we do even, and we are perfectly content in wallowing in it and pretending it doesn’t affect us. We have proven it throughout our existence that we were built for challenge and to overcome obstacles, which has constantly turned us towards each other for comparison. But where do we draw the line? Or do we just continue believing that our nature is not in need of changing?
Let me offer you this – When watching your college football game on TV do you develop the same since of enthusiasm when you hear about people that literally don’t have food? Do you have the same state of enthusiasm and persistent hope that you do for your favorite fighter that you do making a difference in the world?
I pray that I’m not the first one to recognize that as a species our state of enthusiasm, hope, and potential is often directed towards being the victor of stupid petty useless things – often to the point we lose our state of humanity.
I realize how ridiculously outspoken I am being right now – but you have to forgive me for being an idealist. But maybe if we focused the same amount of enthusiasm that we do for the dehumanizing state of violence that often insues from UFC as we did real world issues the world would be a better place.
My point here is not that UFC needs to be stopped. Regardless the sport, or the race or whatever it may be as individuals we need to recognize FIRST that we are on the same team as being living breathing human beings and examine ourselves to make sure we don’t put our desire for victory above our humanity.
