We're so thrilled to welcome Dr. Crystal Webster for a talk on her new book 'Beyond the Boundaries of Childhood: African American Children
in the Antebellum North'. Join us Monday, November 15th, 4:20-5:20 PM EST on zoom https://bit.ly/3jWn4Qc
About the book:
Beyond the Boundaries is a history of Black
childhood in the U.S. during historical periods and in geographic regions experiencing the profoundly
fraught shift from slavery to freedom. In this talk,
Crystal Webster will focus on the uses of Black
children's labor. As part of gradual emancipation,
whites indentured Black children, extending the
exploitation of Black, unfree labor specifically
through children. Webster's child-centered
framework exposes both the centrality of Black
children as historical subjects in the process of
emancipation in the North, as well as their unique
forms of resistance to the exploitation of their labor.
