Chinese scientists have built a solar-powered reactor that turns carbon dioxide and water v***r into jet fuel using nothing but sunlight. Researchers at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, designed the system to mimic natural photosynthesis. Using concentrated sunlight, a cerium oxide-based reactor breaks down CO2 and water into carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which are then converted into liquid jet fuel through a process called Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.
The fuel works in existing aircraft engines without modification, and the process produces no net carbon emissions. Right now, the system is still in early testing, producing about one liter of fuel per day, but researchers say larger setups could scale up production significantly.
Aviation is one of the hardest industries to decarbonize, so this kind of breakthrough offers a promising path toward cleaner air travel in the future.
