Keeping flesh eating beetles is fun! They’re great to have on hand when I need bones cleaned quickly and efficiently, but they do need to eat even when I don’t have a project. From hamsters to ducklings to marmots to turkeys, dermestid beetles are not picky eaters.

Straight out of the beetle cage they tend to have various shades of color. Usually bones have to be followed up with degreasing and whitening to get them to the typical white color.

Here’s some of the critters they’ve cleaned in the past few months!

Here’s an odd one! This boxer mix has anascara (aka a “water baby”) and is formalin preserved and has been ok isopropyl alcohol for a little over a year. Jar is 9 inches tall.

If shipped, will arrive without liquid so you’ll need 70% isopropyl alcohol on hand when the package arrives.

Our June schedule kicks off in Murphy, Idaho on June 1-2 for the 55th Outpost Days! This event is a fundraiser for the Owyhee County Historical Society that features live music, activities and interactive displays, access to the museum to learn more about the area, and of course, vendors!
