Small Town Snippets…. Before we get into today’s snippet I want to thank you all for adding your memories and information every week. I’ve sure learned a lot from you!…and, Diana Elliott, yes the flood waters came into our yard in Byers. We had a chain link fence all around the yard, gates closed, no fences broken but dead sheep, logs and all kinds of junk inside the yard, so evidently the water came over the top of the fence.
Did you have a class ring? Not all, but most did here at Byers. Pictured are my dad’s, mom’s and my class rings. My dad graduated from The Abbey (now a winery) at Canyon City in 1942. His initials (AJL) are on the inside of the ring. My mother graduated from Byers in 1934, no initials but 19 is on the left side of the ring and 34 on the right. I graduated from Byers in 1975, my initials (SL) are on either side, 19 on the left and 75 on the right, and the Bulldog on a “B” with Byers underneath. How rings evolved. I remember the day our rings came in … Mrs. Pitts, the school secretary, had to be paid before she would give them to us, and when I called home (put a dime in the pay phone outside the school office to call home) the response of “HOW MUCH?!?!?” when I repeated “$39.50” and breathed and waited for what seemed forever,
is something I’ll never forget. Oh, the importance of a class ring. Ladies, remember how to wear your going steady boyfriend’s ring? Raid your mom’s knitting/crochet bag and wrap yarn around the beau’s ring so it would fit. The other option was on a chain around your neck. Wearing one of these was a clear sign to everyone YOU had a boyfriend. I’d love to hear your class ring memories!
