When they give you a salary range and ask where you see yourself in it — do not answer too fast.

This is not a trick question. But it is a strategic one.

Answer too low and you have just set a ceiling on your compensation before the offer is even made. Answer too high and you risk pricing yourself out of a role you actually want.

Amy Magyar coaches clients on exactly how to navigate this moment — so you protect your number, keep the conversation alive, and walk away with the best possible offer.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝑰 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝑼𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝑴𝒚 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍
(𝑯𝒊𝒏𝒕: 𝒀𝒐𝒖’𝒗𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒚 𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚.)
I’m an ICF Mentor Coach.
I mentor Coaches to elevate their questions and their impact.
And there’s one word I’ve all but banned from my sentence starters: 𝐖𝐡𝐲.
(And you don't have to be a Coach to benefit from this tip...keep reading)

Why not Why? (I know, ironic.)
Here’s the thing--“Why” is a double agent.
It shows up looking curious, but it quietly works for Team Defensiveness.

Ask someone “Why did you…?” and you’ve lit a fuse.
Even the nicest “Why” can sound like:
“Why would you think that’s a good idea?”
“Why haven’t you finished?”
“Why are you like this?”
You could be talking about sandwiches, and suddenly you’re unpacking a trauma from the third grade.

The Shift That Changes Everything
Instead of “Why,” I use:
What → “What led you to that choice?”
How → “How did you decide that was the next step?”
When → “When did you first notice this pattern?”
Who → “Who can help you move this forward?”

It’s a small linguistic swap with a massive payoff:
More openness
Less defensiveness
More clarity, faster

Here’s the Secret:You don’t have to be a coach to use this.
Leaders. Managers. Parents. Spouses. Friends.
If you ask questions, you can use this tool to create safer, more productive, more transformative conversations.

If you’re a Coach: This is the kind of question refinement I help you master in mentor coaching. Because better questions lead to better sessions.
If you’re not a Coach: This will still change the way you communicate, connect, and lead—at work and in life.

Bottom line: “Why” digs up the past and puts people on the defensive.
“What,” “How,” “When,” and “Who” move you forward—together.
If you want to sharpen your questioning skills, turn clients (or employees) into deep thinkers, and unlock more transformative conversations, let’s talk.

You have been at the same company for 10, 15, maybe 20 years.

That is loyalty. That is depth. That is the kind of institutional knowledge most companies would kill for.

But in an interview, if you cannot explain why you are leaving, and why now, it becomes a liability instead of an asset.

Interviewers wonder: Can they adapt? Are they too set in their ways? Why are they really leaving?

Amy Magyar works with clients who have long tenures to frame their experience as exactly what it is, an advantage, and to address the unspoken questions before they become objections.
