About shou-sugi-ban:
Shou-sugi-ban (pronounced "show soo gee bon") is a wood finishing technique that has been used in Japan for centuries to preserve and beautify wood. The wood is burned and the char is then brushed off to reveal the unique grain patterns. Traditionally done on Japanese Cypress, this technique can be done on a variety of soft woods (ie, American Cypress, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Pine, Hemlock, etc).
