For the last four years, I've had the great pleasure of serving the faculty, administrative staff and students at Canisius College as the associate dean of business. I can't begin to describe how much I've learned and benefited from this experience. I've had the opportunity to create or help create programs that in most cases resulted in fairly immediate and positive change. Now I'm embarking on a different path. Starting this September, I'll be returning to the faculty as a professor of marketing & information systems, taking on a greater role as co-author of the textbook, "Information Systems for Management" (Wily & Sons, Inc.), and spending more time playing the guitar and pursuing my ultimate dream of performing revolutionary, provocative and subversive music in the tradition of Patti Smith, Ani DiFranco and Joan Jett (yeah, all my top musical heroes are chicks. You wanna make something of it?!?) Anyway, change is good. It can be painful, enlightening, rewarding and heartbreaking. But it always leads to something new and different and I’ve never been the kind to stand in one place too long. (Makes you an easy target, eh?). So, I’m going to do a bit of dodge and weave, return to the class and continue mastering the art of helping people become better by struggling with new ideas, thoughts and behaviors; sharing the joy and misery having to stretch your brain and become something different than what you are now. Hmm…there's a connection with the change theme earlier in this post, but I’m too lazy to close the loop right now. I’ll leave it for a later draft or a monetized blog. That’s probably why I need a sabbatical – great thing that, the sabbatical. What a wonderful place the world would be if everyone had that job benefit. Anyway, thanks to everyone I’ve worked with over the last few years. It’s been great in spite of the regular, work-a-day hours, always supporting the party line and the dress code. Change happens. Turn up the amp and party on Garth. Oh, and to my friends at the College, if you see me storming the Tower, feel free to stop me and share an articulate, well-rehearsed, two-minute elevator speech about what pi**es you off most these days. Of course, I’ll no longer be able to do much more than lend a sympathetic ear, but you’ll feel better and I might learn something. Cheers.
