The "In It" EP was recorded at GCR audio in Buffalo, NY beginning in October 2022 and included tracking sessions with NYC session pro Eric Starr on drums and the legendary Graham Maby (Joe Jackson's band) on bass, with lead guitarist Mike Criscione Music and Rob Falgiano on vocals and guitar. Criscione also contributed organ and backing vocals.
Session work continued intermittently at GRC throughout 2023 and included additional lead guitar work by Dan Mylotte, as well as organ and backing vocals, plus dual saxophone tracking by Ellen Pieroni & the Encyclopedia of Soul, who co-wrote the horn chart for "In It" with Falgiano and Criscione, plus "Came Up Punk" with Falgiano.
All GCR sessions were engineered by Marc Warner Hunt, who mixed the finished tracks with Falgiano. Mastering was by Michael Rorick at Rock Central Music in early 2024.
The "In It" EP was envisioned as a continuation of the two-guitar rock the original Plaster Sandals experimented with on 1997's "Pop Revolution." What might the group have evolved into had it stayed together? The songs were written to try to answer that question, with a nod to the era, while embracing the present.
The songs are proudly non-politically correct. The anthemic "In It" drops consistent, casual and defiant F-bombs and "Came Up Punk" concludes that modern American gun culture is insane and a sad invitation to more school shooting tragedies. "Come in Close" was an unfinished Sandals song by Falgiano from 1997, which got polished up. The EP concludes with a cover of "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden, in honor of the brilliance of Chris Cornell. Though sonically much different from the Sandals, Soundgarden was a big influence on Falgiano's approach to songwriting in the 1990s, with their cut measures and swampy wah guitar wails. There is also a faster version of "In It" which was digitally manipulated to be 3 bpms per minute quicker as Falgiano wondered if it perhaps should have been tracked at the faster tempo initially. The listener gets to decide and the manipulation is unhidden. Such is the modern studio age.
The cover artwork is manipulated imagery of blood cells and microbes, the unseen foundation of life. "If anybody asks me if I'm In It, I'm fu***ng in it, I never quit it / If anybody asks me if I'm in in, look in my eyes"
