White Lotus Pottery

It 10pm and I’m nearing finished mixing up a new white glaze and one of the last batches of floating blue glaze I’ll be able to make before my cobalt oxide runs out. It’s the ingredient that makes the glaze blue and it’s very difficult to guarantee that it has been ethically sourced. Therefore, we have decided that once the cobalt supply I have runs out, we will not be making any more blue glaze. It looks beautiful and it sells really well, but most of it is the result of dangerous child labor, human rights abuse, and environmental damage. I bought my supply before I knew about the ethics. If one day these mining practices change, I’d love to bring blue back, but for now, I will not be buying any more cobalt oxide to make my glazes from scratch. This will affect some of the other glazes we have in the studio as well. But it also provides an opportunity to explore some new recipes on the months to come and see what other colors we can bring to White Lotus Pottery. If anyone has awesome recipes they are willing to share for cone 5 oxidation firing, I’d love to trade some of the recipes I’ve come to love!
