I have to put in my two cents regarding this equine abuse subject: First, I was raised with horses, Certified Trainer in the John Lyons method, Level 2 Parelli, Veterinary Assistant Certificate, also trained in Masterson Method therapy. I studied equine behavior from a young age and always made a connection with every horse I handled or trained.
Every horse is different, most are eager to please you if the trust you. Did you hear that? TRUST is our first goal with an equine. After that, you can get them to do anything within their abilities WILLINGLY. Whatever method you use the horse can only do what he is capable of. It is MY job to pay attention to what that animal is telling me with his reactions. He will always try, even if he’s afraid or in pain, if he trusts you. It is MY job to know when to move forward in the horses training and when to stop. Or even just give him time to process what you are asking. Bottom line is that no specific formula for training is right for every horse but ABUSE IS NOT a formula for training - it is a formula that either results in a dangerous horse or in some cases a horse who will injure himself trying to please you. 🥹. It is our job to listen to the horse in our care and develop mutual trust. That is our responsibility as a handler of the most elegant animal in our kingdom. Remember that equines are prey animals and not predatory - this is an important point!!
** Some horses have become dangerous and this should be noted. Those animals should only be handled by an experienced animal behaviorist. Dangerous behavior is generally self preservation behavior. And it’s usually a result of humans! **
