Freelancers Union
07/09/2026
The Freelancers Union stands with Your Visual Colleagues in their fight at the Wall Street Journal for meaningful contract protections for photographers.
Freelancers have the right to determine who uses their work, how it is used, and whether it is used to train or power AI. As companies increasingly seek to license creative work for AI, protecting freelancers’ intellectual property rights has never been more urgent.
At a time when independent workers are routinely asked to accept lower pay, absorb greater uncertainty, and chase down late payments, respecting creators’ rights over their own work should be the bare minimum.
Your Visual Colleagues are being asked to trust that the Wall Street Journal’s corporate leadership will protect their interests. We know that lasting protections don’t come from promises—they come from workers organizing together and securing them in writing.
Freelancers deserve more than assurances. They deserve enforceable rights that protect their livelihoods from corporate decisions that prioritize profits and AI partnerships over the people whose work creates value.
We stand in solidarity with Your Visual Colleagues. Read the full CJR article by Daniella Zalcman at the link below.
