traveled to Laos to photograph Khamphat Paneboun for feature “The Deported,” written by The article examines the deportation of Paneboun, a Texas father of four, and his life after being detained and removed from the United States following a routine immigration check-in.
In Vientiane, Laos, Adam spent a day with Paneboun in his new home and neighborhood on the city’s rural outskirts. Paneboun, a former child refugee whose family resettled in America over 30 years ago, had never left the United States before his deportation to Laos, a country he had never been to.
Adam’s photographs ground the piece in Khamphat Paneboun’s lived reality. Moving through neighborhood streets and quiet interiors, his images reveal the tension of a life caught between two places. With a documentary approach, Adam captures the daily rhythms and place that shape Khamphat’s life away from his family in America.
