This week's Open Sound Concert features The Lily White Quintet - join us on Wednesday (7/8) at 7pm!

“Saxophonist and composer Lily White has played Afro-Cuban jazz with Mario Bauza, soul jazz with Jimmy McGriff, avant-garde jazz with Anthony Braxton, and funky New Orleans jazz with the Swunky Z Brass Band. Her latest Quintet is the classic lineup of jazz’s great modernist period—trumpet, tenor, piano, bass and drums, the minimal yet versatile configuration that served both the straight-ahead Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet and the venturesome second quintet of Miles Davis, with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. This dream band, with Rob Garcia on the drums, David Smith on the trumpet, Bennett Paster on the piano and Jim Whitney on bass takes the tradition and transports it to the 21st century. White’s timbre on the horn can be warm or dry or growly as the moment demands, and she has an encyclopedic command of the saxophone’s resources. In her every solo, you can hear her thinking, and feel her feeling.”–David Gates

Now on view at Open Source: IDENTITIES, a project by Hidemi Takagi. Visit during our open hours through July 26, 2026:
Thurs + Fri 4-6pm
Sat + Sun 2-6pm

IDENTITIES is a photography and interview project centering mixed-race teenagers. Takagi builds long term relationships with the teenagers to gather stories that are both visual and verbal, composing complex and whimsically self-costuming portraits of mixed-race life and its public and private faces. Through IDENTITIES, Takagi documents biracial/multiracial people’s roots and the cultural tendrils that have grown and intertwined from them, and addresses the issues of mixed-race identity, racism, and immigration in America and other countries.
