What is the right pool temp for your swimming needs?
Generally infants shouldn’t be swimming in anything less than 88° F obviously there are exceptions, but this guideline is because infants cannot regulate their own body temperatures like we can.
As your child gets older they move their bodies more and can regulate their temperature. You still want to keep it comfortable and warm especially for new and fearful swimmers, you cannot relax and float if your muscles are tense from being cold.
When you are the age to train, swim laps, surf, etc. temperature matters less than comfort does. If you can do what you need to do without turning blue. You’re probably good.
Heating the pool is expensive. We know, but it’s not as expensive as the alternative of not learning to swim...
For babies and toddlers, warmer is better because they get cold fast. says swim and water-safety classes for children 3 and under should ideally be 87–94°F because hypothermia is a bigger risk at that age.
Watch for: blue/purple lips, shivering, goosebumps, clenched jaw, stiff body, crying (not the regular kind) , low energy. That means warm them up and shorten the lesson.
Tiny, new, and fearful swimmers need warm water, warm voices, and calm faces. Cold bodies don’t learn. — they survive.
