African immigrant entrepreneurs aim to transform Brooklyn Center strip mall The purchase of the aging Shingle Creek Mall was inspired by the growth of businesses run by African immigrants in the western Twin Cities suburbs. Its owners want it to be a model of economic inclusion and innovation.

Black women-led nonprofits take ownership of Brooklyn Center strip mall Brooklyn Center’s Shingle Creek Center is under new ownership. The strip mall, across the street from the Hennepin County Regional Center, now belongs to African Career Education & Resources Inc. (ACER) and the Ignite Business Women Investment Group.

Rochdale Capital recently closed a $499,600 loan participation with Shared Capital Cooperative and Sunrise Banks to finance the purchase of two commercial shopping centers located in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, to convert to cooperative ownership.

Two Black women-led organizations, Ignite Business Women Investment Group and the African Career, Education and Resource, Inc. (ACER) will own and operate the property and create an affordable tenant-owned cooperative for 27 black, immigrant small businesswomen to serve the local community.
