The story began in 1902 when Ferdinand Becker opened Underwriters Insurance Agency. Davis’s son-in-law, Jimmy Cummins, who had been groomed in the business as an underwriter for St. Paul Insurance Company, became an associate in the firm in 1971 and later became a partner. Andrew Smith founded Smith Insurance Agency in 1942. He hired Alvin Smith in 1969 and made him partner, later selling the firm to him upon his retirement. Mike Smith bought and merged another local agency with Smith Insurance. As the industry grew, it was in the best of interest of all of their customers to merge their agencies and purchase under one umbrella, giving them more power with the insurance companies. In 1993, Underwriters Agency merged with Smith Insurance Agency under the name Insurance & Risk Managers. Today, IRM is one of the largest and fastest-growing insurance agencies in south Mississippi.
