In light of some events I've noticed lately through work I would like to take the time to make a bit of a announcement.

Making your account secure is your responsibility and yours alone. No one else can be held accountable for accounts being comprimised but yourself. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent these things from happening.

Most email clients now provide two factor authorization, enabling this means even if someone gets your password they still cannot login to the account because, they need a secondary authorization. I.E, a code that is sent to a cell phone via text or approval from an app on a smartphone.

Why is this important? With how much our lives are digital in this current society we live in. Gaining access to an email account is just the beginning. How many emails do you receive to that account? Are you using their cloud service? Do you have accounts that are important to you that can be accessed using this account.

I had a customer who had their account comprimised. They not only lost access to their email, but it was a microsoft account. Their computer was comprimised because of the password changing they could no longer log in, they lost their one drive. And more importantly, several services they use (Amazon, Ebay) were linked to this email and they lost those accounts too. Fortunately, They had not updated their credit card information on the website so no credit fraud occurred.

But it brings up a rather serious topic. Security of your accounts and your own digital safety revolve around you, the user using the tools you're given to protect yourself. Next time you're perusing your email, check the settings to see if you have things like notifications turned on in case of account changes, if you've set up an alternate email and phone, and if they offer two factor authentication. These little changes can mean the difference from doing things like normal and suddenly finding you're a victim of an account takeover.

Gonna be tired tomorrow at work. Pulling a late nighter on a charity repair. Computer itself is being particularly stubborn, but i'm making headway.
