If the nerve between the brain and gut (the vagus nerve) were cut, the gut would function independently. The gut produces more neurotransmitters, which affect mood and behavior than the brain does.
The bacteria in our gut are so important, that they can function independently even if they are cut from the vagus nerve. Aside from producing good chemicals that promote overall good health, they also produce neurotransmitters, which helps in improving our mood.
