"This decision was not made lightly, nor was it made without a great deal of disappointment," Superintendent Dr. John Federline stated in a letter to partners last spring. "This program has served hundreds of adult students across northeast Oklahoma for over two decades and the incredible work done by Dr. Amy McCready and her staff has made our district proud."

Federline said, "Unfortunately, the Union district has been dealing with declining enrollment in grades K-12 for several years. This school year, we saw a drop in enrollment of almost 500 students. There are a variety of reasons why we, and other districts across the state are seeing drops in enrollment, including declining birth rates, an ill-advised voucher system that funnels money and students away from public education, a cool housing market, and political tensions at the state and federal level. Because our enrollment has dropped, our state allocation will drop as well. To balance our budget, we must examine all programming and positions to ensure that we are providing the very best services for our staff and students. Even with the grant funding that we have received, ending the ABE program will result in a substantial savings for the Union district."
