THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Each year, the Thanksgiving holiday results in millions of travelers on the road, en route to and from their holiday destination. With your help, NHTSA wants to ensure drivers and their passengers are safe during this special time of year.

During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2017, there were 365 passenger vehicle occupants killed in vehicle crashes across the nation.

Two recent trends have sprung from the Thanksgiving holiday: “Blackout Wednesday” and “Danksgiving". These trends highlight, and even encourage, the heavy consumption of alcohol and ma*****na throughout the long holiday weekend.

We need to remind vehicle drivers that impaired driving of any kind - whether drugged or drunk - is dangerous and illegal in all 50 States, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC. Whether the drug was legally prescribed or illegally obtained, drug-impaired driving poses a threat to the drivers, their passengers, and other road users.

To help spread the word about the dangers of these trends, NHTSA encourages our organization to join in a social media blitz featuring the hashtags and to help deliver lifesaving messages into the public conversation and encourage positive actions that can help reduce danger on the roadways.

On “Blackout Wednesday,” the focus will be to remind drivers that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. Likewise, on “Danksgiving,” we will focus on raising awareness about the dangers of drug-impaired driving with the campaign message If You Feel Different, You Drive Different. It doesn’t matter what term you use: If a person is feeling a little high, buzzed, stoned, wasted, or drunk, he or she is impaired and should never get behind the wheel.

On October 29, 2019, a concerned pediatrician alerted NHTSA about safety concerns regarding child seats being sold in the United States.

Parents and caregivers should be aware of signs that a car seat does not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and may pose significant risk to an infant or other vehicle occupant in the event of a crash. Some of these telltale signs may include seats without lower anchor attachments, without proper labeling, lacking a chest clip, or only secured by a seat belt crossed over the seat and not correctly installed.

A parent's priority is always to keep their child safe - whether at home, at school, or in the car. Please make sure that your child (and all your passengers) are buckled up in the car. More than that, make sure that your children are buckled up in the right seat for their age and size, and if under age 13, are in the back seat.

Join us in our mission to ensure all Americans are safe in their cars, every trip, every time.
