Don’t Fall for This Trap
Many of you have seen the videos on Facebook or Instagram claiming that insurance agents keep up to 80 percent of the premium you pay on your home or auto policy. That is simply not true. These ads are lead generators designed to sell your personal information to insurance agents.
Anyone who falls for these types of videos will quickly discover the downside. As soon as you enter your name, your information is sold—often to ten, sometimes even hundreds of agents. The result is that your phone and email will be flooded with messages for the next year.
Let’s clear up a common misconception. Agents do not make the majority of the money. On average, they earn about ten percent. That means they make ten dollars for every one hundred dollars you spend. That small commission helps pay for the staff who manage your policy throughout the year, assist you when issues arise, and provide the advice you need to avoid costly mistakes.
And here is the real kicker. If you make a mistake, you are fully liable and there is usually no way to fix it. But if your agent makes a mistake, they carry errors and omissions insurance that protects you. That coverage ensures you can be made whole again.
Having a local agent is a smart move. I have been in this business for 23 years, and I can confidently say that online policies are usually not cheaper when you consider the full picture.
When you file a claim, ask yourself these questions. Who at the 800 number will show up at your home if it burns down and walk you through the process, step by step? Who at the 800 number will visit the body shop and help resolve a dispute between the adjuster and the repair shop? Who at that number will make sure your coverage and your claim payout match exactly what you expected?
The truth is, the person at the 800 number does not know you and will not go the extra mile. A good local agent will.
The bottom line is this: having a personal agent is worth every penny. In the long run, you will come out ahead with someone who genuinely cares about protecting you and your family.

Why Your Insurance Advice Should Come from a Licensed, Seasoned Agent. Not Uncle Joe.
In today’s world, getting insurance has become as easy as tapping a few buttons online. It’s tempting to go with the cheapest quote or the biggest name. But when life hits hard, when you’re standing in your driveway watching the last of your home smolder, or when you’re lying in a hospital bed wondering what’s next, it won’t be a website, a celebrity spokesperson, or even your mortgage company holding your hand. And it definitely won’t be Uncle Joe from the family barbecue who "knows a guy."
Now, to be clear, we have deep respect for mortgage lenders, realtors, and yes, even Uncle Joe. We work hand-in-hand with many incredible professionals in those fields, and we value those partnerships. But here’s where we draw the line. We never allow someone else to be the middleman when it comes to protecting your life and future. Just like a great realtor is critical to finding the right home, and a seasoned lender is essential to financing it wisely, a licensed and committed insurance agent is key to protecting it all once you own it.
Insurance Isn't Just a Product. It's a Plan.
Real insurance protection starts with a conversation, not a quote. At Good Steward Insurance Group, we believe the best coverage comes from understanding, not assumptions. That means taking time to sit down and uncover the specific needs of your household.
What are your risks?
What are your goals?
What would it take for your family to bounce back after a major loss?
And beyond that:
If your home were a total loss tonight, do you know how your policy would respond tomorrow?
Would your spouse or loved ones be financially okay if you couldn't work for six months or ever again?
Do you know the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value, and which one your policy provides?
Have you reviewed whether your liability coverage is enough to protect your home, income, and future?
Are your policies aligned with the current value of your assets and lifestyle?
Do you understand what is excluded in your policy before it's too late?
These aren’t questions a chatbot or a quick phone call from a bank can answer. This is the work of a licensed, seasoned agent who listens, explains, and builds protection around your life, not just your address.
The Danger of Chasing Price or Prestige:
It’s natural to want to save money or feel safe choosing a big-name brand. But cheaper isn’t always better, and a well-known logo doesn’t equal well-built protection. Too often, people find out after a claim that what they bought wasn’t coverage. It was just a policy. And by then, it's too late.
And what you see isn’t always what you get.
Many people don’t realize that the numbers shown on their declaration pages; the limits, coverages, or payouts do not guarantee payment. Those are simply the maximums a policy might pay if the loss is covered at all. Just because it says "$300,000" on a page doesn’t mean that money will come to you after a loss. There is so much more buried in the fine print of exclusions, conditions, endorsements, and definitions that ultimately determine what’s covered and what isn’t.
This is why working with someone who understands the entire policy, not just the premium and the page layout, is crucial.
We’re Not for Everyone. And That’s Okay.
At Good Steward Insurance Group, we’re not chasing every household. We're not here to sell you something you don’t need. We’re here to educate. If you understand what you’re buying and why it matters, then we’ve done our job whether you choose us or not.
When disaster strikes, the last thing you want is confusion about your coverage. Our mission is to make sure that day never comes without you knowing exactly what you're protected from and how your policy works.
Because when it matters most, it won’t be your banker, realtor, or friend with strong opinions showing up. It will be us, your insurance partner who took the time to get it right.
