The National Fire Protection Association offers these safety tips:
*Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from any heating source, furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable heater.
*Never use your oven to heat your home.
*Turn portable heaters off when you leave a room.
*Cool Fireplace ashes and put them in a covered metal container and place away from your home. Use a screen to stop flying sparks.
