🦷 Tips From the Bench: Restoring Anteriors with Dark Dentin

There may not be a silver bullet for matching a single anterior restoration over dark dentin, but a few extra steps can help create a more predictable result and reduce the chance of a patient return visit.

A few recommendations from our bench:

• Let the shade goal help determine the restorative material
• Select the shade and material before preparation whenever possible
• Take a pre-op photo with the shade tab visible and aligned with the tooth being matched
• Consider blocking dark areas with a white core paste before scanning or taking the final impression
• Take a photo of the prep with a dentin shade tab
• Remember that a darkened root can show through the marginal tissue
• Use try-in paste to help achieve the final blend
