Most people think of puppets as simple children’s entertainment. But for hundreds of years, they served a much higher purpose.

In medieval Europe, long before printed books were common, the Church used marionettes to teach Bible stories to congregations who couldn’t read.

These intricate string puppets got their name from 'Little Mary,' a reference to the Virgin Mary.

Traveling performers and priests used them to act out scenes from scripture in town squares and inside churches.

The moving figures made the stories vivid and memorable. This practice brought the gospel to life for ordinary people.

But its success created a later dilemma. By the 16th and 17th centuries, some church authorities began to question if using puppets for sacred stories was too casual.

They feared it might make holy events seem like common street theater. The tool that once helped spread faith was later viewed by some as a potential distraction.
