Earth Explorers
Our students learn video technology, interviewing and storytelling. We introduce them to working scientists at institutions like NCAR and NOAA. They interview their scientists, video their lab and field work and return to the video lab to produce 5 to 8 minute videos. The students present their videos at a public gala with the school, the scientists and the community.

Representation matters!
A 2013 study by University of Texas sociologist Catherine Riegle-Crumb in the journal Social Science Quarterly investigated the factors that determined whether or not there was a gender gap in AP Physics classes. The study found that in communities with more women working in STEM Fields, more girls were taking AP Physics in high school.
An NPR report on the study’s findings lays it out clearly: “Teenage girls growing up in communities where women are better represented in tech are more likely to see women commenting on tech issues in public forums and in school discussions — and more likely to run into a friend's astrophysicist mom at a birthday party.”
This study exemplifies the motto of Earth Explorers: See it, Believe it, Become it.
You can’t become what you don’t see and Earth Explorers is committed to helping students see what’s possible.

So what does a typical Earth Explorers semester look like? 🤔
🎥 Teams of 4-5 students work together to make a short film about a local scientist or engineer. Past films have featured talking plants, time travel, near misses with natural disasters, and superhero scientists.
🧪 Student teams meet their scientist directly four times, and spend the whole semester working on their films.
📺 The semester ends with a premiere of each 5-8 minute film in front of families, friends, teachers, Scientists, Mentors, and more!
