The Académie Française, established in 1635 to regulate the French language, has presented the final section of the ninth edition of its official dictionary. So meticulously do the academicians (known as the ‘immortels’) labour over a new edition (meeting every Wednesday for debates beneath the dome of the Institut de France) that work is slow — the latest edition, which replaces the eighth edition of 1935, was initiated back in 1986! The academy is famously conservative when it comes to defending French from excessive foreign influence, but some of the additions to this R-Z section include the imports ‘vegan’ and ‘wokisme.’ Not found in the ninth edition are new words beginning with letters A-Q, such as ‘émoji’ … which might have to wait, oh, another half-century or so for the next edition 📖
