FreeBSD Foundation
The FreeBSD Foundation supports the growth of the FreeBSD Project through advocacy, project development, travel and project grants, and legal support.
At BSDCan 2026, we spoke with Sarah, a software engineering student at the University of Ottawa and an up-and-coming open source contributor.
Sarah recently made her first open source contribution and attended BSDCan to learn more about FreeBSD, connect with the community, and explore new opportunities to get involved. She also helped start the Free and Open Source Software Club at uOttawa to encourage more students to contribute to open source.
One thing Sarah shared is that it would be helpful to have more resources for students and first-time contributors looking to get started.

What advice would you give someone who is new to FreeBSD or making their first open source contribution?

Meet Ayrton Munoz, a Software Engineer at Immunant and FreeBSD contributor.
Ayrton first got involved with FreeBSD through an experimental driver project and has since contributed to efforts including Rust support in the FreeBSD kernel.
At last week's FreeBSD Developer Summit, we asked attendees about their path into FreeBSD and what they enjoy most about the community.
For Ayrton, one of the highlights of the Summit was the opportunity to connect with contributors in person, exchange ideas, and get to know the people behind the code.

FreeBSD Day is tomorrow.
We’re feeling a little nostalgic…
What version of FreeBSD did you start on?
Was it a CD, a stack of floppies, or something else?
