Moments like this remind of what it is we are working so hard to protect. Today we had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with J and L pods, a total of 50+ whales.

One of our volunteers was so kind to take us out on the water today, and we were viewing the SRKWs from over 300 yards away. At one point we noticed the J19 matriline and others headed directly towards us. We slowly maneuvered out of their way, but every directional change we made the whales followed, getting closer and closer. For the safety of the whales and to limit noise disruptions we shut off the engines and watched. Eventually, the orcas surfaced right beside our boat and surrounded us! This happened two separate times! We were in so much awe to be in the presence of these incredible beings!

We’re a little behind on updating our Sightings Report, but we will be sure to post the video clips from today soon. In the meantime, you can get a peek of the day’s highlights by watching our story.

AI4Orcas Update! We are beginning the permitting process to get our very first hydrophone installed in Edmonds, Washington! Once we get all the necessary permits to install a mooring site we will be placing our hydrophone in the water. We are in partnership with , and our hydrophone will be a part of their network.

If you aren’t familiar with our AI4Orcas program, we are working alongside Orcasound and Microsoft Hackathon volunteers on AI technology that uses machine learning to identify whale sounds. The AI software will be listening to the hydrophones 24/7 and will send out a notification when it detects whales. This will serve as an early warning system to entities such as the US Navy, Washington State Ferries, cargo and oil tankers, researcher agencies, and enforcement agencies. The idea is to give orcas ample space and quiet waters so they can successfully forage.

We are also looking to install a hydrophone in Seattle, the South Sound, and two around the US Navy’s Northwest Training and Testing Center on the Washington coast. We still need to raise more money for the remaining hydrophones, so if you would like to learn more or make a donation please visit our website!
