The Pure Hearts Foundation hosts annual fundraisers benefiting Pediatric Cardiology at Boston Children's Hospital. It was created and is entirely administered by just the three of us - Yana Johnson, Matt Johnson and Vanessa Blakeley, and inspired by our daughter and Vanessa’s goddaughter, Kaia Faye Johnson. During a routine pregnancy ultrasound to find out the s*x of our baby, we were handed a pie
ce of paper that would change our lives forever. We did not even understand what those words meant, let alone know what lay ahead of us. Our beautiful daughter, Kaia Faye, was born on September 30, 2011, absolutely perfect, with a very special little heart. She was diagnosed with a complete AV canal defect and a mildly smaller, but thankfully functioning, left ventricle. Kaia underwent her first open-heart surgery at almost three months old. Thanks to the wonderful care she has received at Boston Children’s Hospital, Kaia has beaten all odds and recently had her second surgery to further repair her mitral valve postponed once again. As a family, we refused to let this become just another sad story. Together with our great friend and Kaia’s Godmother, Vanessa, we joined in the creation of Pure Hearts – an organization through which we raise funds that go directly to Boston Children’s Hospital as an effort to aid them in continuing their unparalleled quality of health care and medical research. Our foundation and ongoing events help children and families in similar situations as Kaia’s as they find their way to wellness. They also celebrate all of the support and love that have gone into the care of Kaia and her extended network that have played significant roles in her story. We may not be the largest or most well-known organization yet, but we believe more than anything in the magnitude of our cause and that together with your support we can make a difference in the lives of so many pure hearts children all over the world!
