Schools as Shared Civic Infrastructure (SSIR) 06/15/2026

"How can we teach students to embrace their civic identity as members of their communities and support them in leading our nation's democratic renaissance?"

That's the question Elizabeth Clay Roy, CEO of Generation Citizen — a New Profit Build grantee — takes on in a recent op-ed for the Stanford Social Innovation Review.

It's a timely one. As she cites in her op-ed, only 16% of young people believe democracy is working for them. Clay Roy lays out how schools, as the largest remaining collective spaces in America, are uniquely positioned to change that.

She shares how Generation Citizen is partnering with schools to do exactly that — through experiential, project-based learning that has students actually practicing democracy on real local issues.

Read her op-ed to learn how we can move from isolated bright spots to a generation of young people who see civic participation as theirs to shape. ➡️ https://ssir.org/articles/entry/clay-roy-civics-education

In 2025, Brandeis University completed the most extensive impact evaluation of our 27-year history—analyzing 300+ conversations about what happens when we partner with social entrepreneurs over time.

The findings: our approach—combining capital, capacity, and community—delivers support that is trusted, effective, and enduring for proximate social entrepreneurs.

Alumni leaders report stronger boards, better leadership, clearer strategy. Most importantly, the impact persists long after our partnership ends. Our model proves that combining capital with capacity, community, and trust creates lasting change.

A Small Step and A Giant Leap - New Profit 05/15/2026

What is required of us today in order to create the future we desire? ⭐ Shruti Sehra, New Profit CEO, draws on a powerful lesson from her father, an engineer at NASA who spent his career building toward something most people could not yet imagine.

Shruti heard him speak shortly before his retirement, where he declared that personal flying vehicles (think: Jetsons vibes 🚀) would be commonplace "in the short term." When she asked what he meant, he told her that at NASA, short term means within 50 years.

"What my father's work taught me is that the short term and the long term are not in competition. They are the same work, seen at different scales. The question is whether we have the courage to hold both."

Shruti unpacks what this means for the social impact sector today: how to navigate funding volatility and policy headwinds while boldly investing in the future — through invention, intentionality, and community — and why proximity to communities is the key to lasting change.
