Dorothy Height Interviewed by Julian Bond: Explorations in Black Leadership Series 03/30/2021

FOR ALL THE YOUNG PEOPLE I KNOW
and the young at heart ❤💙💜💖
The late, great Dorothy Height as interviewed by Julian Bond.

She quoted her Mentor Mary McLeod Bethune as saying:

"I Leave You...
Love
Faith
and Hope.
Respect for use of power.
The challenge of developing confidence in one another.
The responsibility TO our young people."

And Ms. Height further elaborates...
The responsibility TO our young people is to help them, understand...

WHO they are and WHAT the struggle has been...
That they ARE the future.
The future does NOT begin later, but NOW.
They are NOT leaders for tomorrow, they are Youth Leaders for today and what you do today as Youth Leaders prepares you for what you will do as Adult Leaders tomorrow.

This was true yesterday
It is true today
And it will be true tomorrow.

Please tune in on May 18th and tell the South End Landmark District Commission to Delay The Vote on the Harriet Tubman House until AFTER the CoVid19 Pandemic!

Your Voice Counts see information below...

ON MAY 18TH AT 5PM, TELL THE SOUTH END LANDMARK DISTRICT COMMISSION TO DELAY THEIR VOTE UNTIL AFTER THE STATE OF EMERGENCY IS LIFTED! RSVP for the Facebook event here: Delay the Vote! Save the Harriet Tubman House!

The South End Landmark District Commission held a hearing on May 5th via Zoom, with an agenda item focusing on the Harriet Tubman House. Developer New Boston Ventures plans to purchase this vital community asset, demolish it, and construct 66 luxury condos. The meeting started at 5:30pm, however the Commission didn’t start discussing the Harriet Tubman House until 11pm. This process is clearly flawed and inaccessible to many people not able to stay awake until midnight or without internet access for a Zoom video meeting. Despite the obstacles, due to pressure from those who were able to attend the meeting, the Commission stopped the meeting at around midnight and postponed their vote.

Many decision-makers in this process stand to make money off of the sale of the Tubman House. Commission member John Amodeo is the landscape architect for the proposed condo development, and he recused himself from the Harriet Tubman House discussion since there is a clear conflict-of-interest. Mr. Amodeo has been a member of the Commission since 1997! Commissioners work in the Boston design field and are called upon repeatedly to vote on their colleagues’ projects, setting up constant conflict-of-interest situations.

Former New Boston Ventures’ Chief of Operations Kathryn Burton was recently appointed Mayor Walsh’s Chief of Staff, another example of the influence the private sector has on public decisions (Ms. Burton previously contributed thousands of dollars to Mayor Walsh’s campaign, as has New Boston Ventures). How can we expect decisions to be made in the community’s best interests when so many decision-makers are looking to make a profit off of this community asset?

To ensure this disastrous project isn’t pushed through, the community must stand up and say no more luxury condos, especially not during a pandemic! Join us at the SELDC meeting on 5/18 at 5pm to make a stand! The Harriet Tubman House must be preserved for community use, not demolished for more luxury condos!

Tune into the Zoom link for the SELDC meeting on May 18th at 5pm: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89833543780
