Vardavar is one of the oldest and most vibrant Armenian holidays. Dating back to pre-Christian times, it was originally dedicated to the goddesses Astghik—the deity of water, beauty, and love—and Anahit, the mother goddess of fertility and wisdom.
While it has ancient roots, the holiday is now officially celebrated as the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Today, it remains a beautiful blend of faith and tradition, where we douse each other with water to wash away bad luck and welcome joy and positivity.
I’m so grateful to celebrate these beautiful roots with my chosen family. May your day be as refreshing as the tradition itself!
