The first step after a layoff is important — but it’s only one step in what has become an increasingly difficult job market. Beyond filing for unemployment, there are several additional moves every job seeker should make immediately.
1. Update your resume and online presence.
Make sure your resume is current, accurate, and aligned with today’s hiring expectations. Refresh your LinkedIn profile and ensure your job board profiles — especially on the platforms you actually rely on — have been updated within the last few days. Active, recent updates matter.
2. Reconnect with your recruiter.
A strong relationship with a trusted recruiter can make a huge difference. They can give you real-time feedback on the market, help you position yourself effectively, and put you in front of decision-makers you may not otherwise reach.
3. Understand the market reality.
After decades in this industry, we’ve never seen a shift quite like this: a long “no-fire, no-hire” period turning abruptly into widespread layoffs. This is one of the toughest times to be unemployed, and it often takes a full-time effort — and your entire network — to secure new work.
4. Stay open-minded and flexible.
Many companies are strapped and simply cannot hire unless the need is absolutely critical. Remaining adaptable to roles, industries, or interim opportunities can keep you moving forward until the market improves.
