What does it take to find your voice, and turn a childhood dream into a career on the world stage? In this installment of Leaders Among Us, Boston University President Melissa Gilliam sits down with BU alum and award-winning Singaporean news anchor Glenda Chong (COM'97) for an intimate conversation about purpose, trust, and what it truly means to lead.
Recorded in March 2026 at the 20th Annual Asia Alumni Forum in Singapore, the conversation begins with a vivid origin story: at 13 years old, Glenda stood in front of her family's TV, pointed at the news anchor on screen, and told her parents, "I'm going to be her." She never wavered from that goal.
Glenda credits her time at Boston University as a turning point, not just academically, but personally. Growing up in Singapore, where speaking out wasn't the norm, BU challenged her to find her voice. Her standout resume, built on a BU education and key internships, helped her land a role at Singapore's only media company, and she never looked back.

37 students. 200+ municipalities. One shared vision: an equitable clean energy future.
Boston University students are on the front lines of Massachusetts' energy transition, supporting real clean energy work through the Clean Energy and Environment Legacy Transition (CELT) Initiative. And they're armed with powerful new tools: the CELT Energy Transition Atlas and Massachusetts Energy Explorer, platforms that centralize years of scattered data and make it actionable for communities across the Commonwealth.
Developed by Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability, these tools represent what happens when students, faculty, and public agencies collaborate to solve climate challenges. As one student noted, "We have an unparalleled window into the state's clean energy future, and we're learning how to drive it forward."

An Ebola outbreak in Central Africa that has already claimed more than 130 lives has become a “public health emergency of international concern,” according to the World Health Organization. Although the outbreak hasn’t yet reached pandemic levels, the WHO’s director general has said he is “deeply concerned about the scale and speed” of its spread.
The Boston University–led global infectious diseases tracker, BEACON, first flagged an uptick in Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri Province in mid-May, noting the possible presence of a virus species—Bundibugyo ebolavirus—that currently has no vaccine. In subsequent reports, the BEACON team monitored the disease’s rapid spread, including across the border to Uganda; the tracker is based at BU’s Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases.
To find out how concerned we should be about the current outbreak and to get the latest on research to slow or halt its progress, we spoke with Robert Davey, NEIDL’s interim director and a BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine professor of virology, immunology, and microbiology.
