I've heard from many constituents regarding yesterday's vote on the House transparency legislation, and I want to share why I supported it.

The legislation gives the State Auditor the authority to audit the Legislature in the areas identified during the Supreme Judicial Court process: official budgets, independent audits, monetary settlements, and transactions related to legislative spending. It also authorizes the Auditor to request documents and conduct interviews related to those areas.

In addition, the bill creates a public records request process for the Legislature, giving the public greater access to official legislative documents and proceedings than has existed before.

I understand that many people wanted the bill to go further, and I respect those views. I also believe there are legitimate constitutional questions when one elected official is given broad authority over a separate and co-equal branch of government. This legislation attempts to balance the will of the voters, the guidance provided by the Supreme Judicial Court, and the constitutional separation of powers that exists within our state government.

Transparency and accountability are important to me. My office and I have always worked to be accessible, responsive, and open with the people we serve. If you have questions about my vote, the legislation, or how to access information about legislative budgets, payroll, committee activity, or other public proceedings, I am always happy to have that conversation.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected].

I am excited to announce 6 opportunities to meet with myself and my office this upcoming month, including a new format called a Walk and Talk! (more details to come on this event)

I look forward to hopefully seeing you there to discuss issues that are important to you. And as always, if you are unable to make one of these times and need to meet with me, please email me at [email protected].
