We Read

While we enjoy the 2026 FIFA World Cup, I take this opportunity to recommend this book.

📖 OFFSIDE by Christina Diaz Gonzalez and illustrations by Mari Costa.

I loved the multicultural characters! I disliked the mayor, but it was a pretty accurate representation. 😅 This graphic novel features text in both English and Spanish. The story follows 5 different students, Al, Nicky, Palmer, Fabiola, and Seba. They are all part of the soccer team at Jackson Middle School. ⚽️ The team is going co-ed for the first time and not everyone is happy about it, including some parents. 🤨 But, that’s not the only problem they are facing… Palmer discovers that the girls’ soccer team does not have the same resources as the boys’ team. 😤 Will they be able to work together to fight this inequality? 👀 There’s got to be teamwork to do what’s right!

¡Me encantaron los personajes multiculturales! El alcalde no me gustó, pero la representación fue bastante fiel a la realidad. 😅 Esta novela gráfica incluye texto en inglés y español. La historia sigue a 5 estudiantes: Al, Nicky, Palmer, Fabiola y Seba. Todos forman parte del equipo de fútbol de la escuela secundaria Jackson. ⚽️ El equipo se vuelve mixto por primera vez y no todos están contentos, incluyendo algunos padres. 🤨 Pero ese no es el único problema que enfrentan… Palmer descubre que el equipo de fútbol femenino no cuenta con los mismos recursos que el masculino. 😤 ¿Podrán trabajar juntos para combatir esta desigualdad? 👀 ¡El trabajo en equipo es fundamental para lograr lo correcto!
