When my book that called out adults who ruin this great game by taking youth baseball way too seriously took the world by storm, I hoped to create an awareness of the damaging effects that bad behavior at youth sports games has on everyone. It ruins the experience for spectators, players and coaches, and as for umpires they continue to resign in droves, because who needs to put themselves in potentially dangerous situations like what happened several days ago in Milford, MA?

On July 21st an outstanding American Legion baseball playoff game between two excellent teams was stopped when a fight broke out behind the backstop and spilled onto the field. Police were brought in, the game was suspended, and two days later was resumed with a "heavy police presence". Unfortunately as time passes all anyone will remember about this great event was the ugly brawl that halted the game.

As an umpire, I commend the umpiring crew for how they handled a very volatile situation, and am glad none of them were injured as haymakers were flying during this fiasco.

There is a severe nationwide shortage of umpires and incidents like this certainly don't encourage anyone to rush to become an umpire. What sane person wants to be caught in the crossfire of something like this?
