There are people who come into your life for a season, and there are people who help shape the direction of your life. Pastor Chris Sumner was one of those people for me.

I began my career in youth development in my twenties, and there are only a handful of leaders whose wisdom, encouragement, and example left a lasting mark on the leader I have become. Pastor Chris was one of them.

I first met him through my “big little brother,” Roosevelt Smith, and from that moment on, I had the privilege of experiencing a man who genuinely cared about young people, believed in developing leaders, and lived out his faith with humility and purpose.

If Pastor Chris ever mentored you, coached you, encouraged you, challenged you, prayed for you, or simply crossed your path in a meaningful way, I encourage you to join us as we celebrate a life that impacted so many.

And if you never had the opportunity to know him personally, I would still encourage you to come and support his family. Lives like his remind us that true legacy is not measured by titles or accomplishments, but by the people we invest in.

The recent decisions impacting Temporary Protected Status have weighed heavily on my heart. Not simply because of the policy itself, but because every policy ultimately impacts people.

We must resist the temptation to define entire communities by the actions of a few. Immigrants are not a single story. They are parents, students, entrepreneurs, caregivers, educators, and essential members of our communities who contribute every day.

My parents came to this country from Trinidad and Tobago with the hope of building a better future. They worked hard, paid taxes, raised their family, and believed in contributing more than they received. That story is shared by countless families across this nation.

Leadership requires us to see people before politics and humanity before headlines. Compassion is not weakness. It is one of the strongest foundations of a healthy community.

As leaders, neighbors, and citizens, we can hold space for both secure borders and human dignity. Those values do not have to compete.
