In recent days, the Supreme Court ruled in Mullin vs. Doe that federal law bars courts from reviewing the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to end TPS designations and rejected the petition by 300,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians, overturning a lower court injunction.

While this means that these struggling immigrants are going to get deported or seek solace in the arms of another foreign nation, at issue is not just the fate of these struggling immigrants but also begs the question, what kind of nation are we? Will we be a country that welcomes, as Emma Lazarus’s poem The New Colossus reads at the foot of the Statue of Liberty, “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.” Will these struggling immigrants find refuge, fleeing oppression and persecution in our land?

The first colonists in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 and Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, came in search of prosperity and were fleeing religious persecution. We have a history of sheltering immigrants who wish to live their lives in safety, to raise families and to live long and prosper.

Under the previous Administration, thousands found refuge through the innovative and pathbreaking Humanitarian Parole and Temporary Protected Status programs. Thousands of Afghans and Ukrainians are welcome here and they are weaving their way into the fabric of American Democracy. Will we turn these brave Haitians and Syrians away, in the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr not based on the “content of there character but by the color of their skin.”

We are a nation of immigrants and can welcome these Haitians & Syrians with hot soup and bread not rubber bullets and tear gas. Let us welcome these immigrants to the Promised Land. On Wednesday June 24th, twin 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Yaracuy, Venezuela, claiming the lives of 2,295 according to the British Broadcasting Corporation. BBC Radio documents that 11,267 were injured with that figure expected to rise. “The search for survivors of the devastating earthquakes was growing increasingly desperate in its fifth day,” according to The New York Times, with hopes fading of finding more people alive under the rubble,” as aftershocks rattled the area. It will be weeks before the full “scale of the destruction,” is known. “Doctors have said that in La Guaira (pronounced La-WHY-ra),” the hardest hit part of Venezuela, “officials are processing 750 bodies a day,” according to Zhuang, Herrera, Glatsky, Ferrero, Turkewitz and Urdaneta writing for the Times. The United Nations reported that the number of wrecked buildings suggested that the full scale of the humanitarian toll will rise with time. July 4th - Independence Day

This week in Washington, we are writing to protect our Democracy. In recent days, leadership in Washington has taken aim at the franchise. If passed and signed into law, this legislation would make it harder for Americans to vote. Specifically, the SAVE Act would require voters to produce proof of U.S. citizenship when going to the voting booth. Only 45% of Americans have a passport. Fewer have a birth certificate with their original names. When getting married, women often change to their husband's name and birth certificates have their maiden name, rendering a birth certificate invalid if presented as a form of identification. This legislation makes it more difficult to vote by mail tying federal funds to compliance with anti-voting measures in the SAVE Act. Voting by mail would be revoked, taking aim at the disabled who cannot make it to their polling location. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act does not allow for Driver's Licenses to be used as a form of identificition. The legislation would curb AVR, Automatic Voter Registration. The legislation is an unfunded mandate when it comes to making citizens prove their citizenship, and shifts the burden to pay for compliance to the states.
