Hemochromatosis is a genetic condition that allows iron to build up in the body. Usually, the intestines tightly regulate how much iron is absorbed from food, but the gene mutation in people with hemochromatosis causes too much iron to be taken up. It usually gets stored in the organs, especially the liver, heart, and pancreas, where it causes damage over time.

There's also a type of hemochromatosis that isn't passed down through genes. Instead, people get secondary hemochromatosis because their body absorbs too much iron for another reason, like certain health conditions that affect the GI tract or getting a lot of blood transfusions.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where the body body attacks its own melanocytes, the cells that give skin, eyes, and hair color. The destruction leads to patches of skin with no color.

Anyone can get , but most cases start before the age of 20. The condition affects about 1% of people worldwide.

Vitiligo is not contagious. There's no cure yet, but some treatments can help with the skin changes and may even restore some pigment.
