BATTLE OF DELHI âš“
🌍 LOCATION : DELHI, SLAVE SULTANATE (now INDIA)
⚔️ TAMERLANE (TIMUR) INVASION OF INDIA -1398
In 1398, the Mongol - Turkish warrior Timur, ruler of Central Asia from his capital at Samarkand, found a pretext to strike south into India. His victory over the Sultan of Delhi confirmed the irresistible fighting qualities of his army and the awesome destructiveness that made him a legend of cruelty.
Timur was a muslim and he alleged that his co-religionist Sultan Nasiruddin Mehmood of Delhi in India was being too tolerant toward his Hindu subjects. On this excuse, he marched into the Indian subcontinent in late summer of 1398, his tribal steppe army massacred as they advanced. The Mongol invaders faced Sultan Mehmood’s army outside the walls of Delhi. The Sultan had a force of war elephants, the huge creatures with which the steppe warriors were unfamiliar and horses feared. Timur did a great thing to counter war elephants. He loaded camels with fire, and released them to spread fear among the sultan's elephants. The charge of Temoor’s horsemen was certainly decisive, reportedly scattering the Indian soldiers, "same as a hungry lion scatter a flock of sheep." Victorious in the field, Timur permitted his warriors to sack Delhi in a celebration of destruction from which the city took a century to recover.
