Conclusion
The biceps femoris flexes the lower leg with most power at extended muscle lengths, particularly when the knee is nearly straight (10–30° flexion) depending on your current muscle stretch limits and the hip is moderately flexed (45–90° flexion).
The most effective “line of pull” for both heads (e.g., resultant) is with the missing motion key of a slight lateral rotation of the knee before flexion, with the long head optimally engaged by stretching across both hip and knee joints.
There is a major reason we adjust the saddle tilt and the rotation of the foot interface, which provides you with more and better knee protection, as the knee has a “big wheel & small wheel” design.
Training protocols should leverage long-length eccentric exercises and external knee rotation to maximize recruitment, force production, and injury prevention.
