Columbus Terminal Manager Rob Roop has been playing ball most of his life. His many years as an elite softball were recently recognized when he was inducted into the Indiana Softball Hall of Fame.
Roop and fellow player Fred Lawson are the first two players from Columbus to be inducted since 1984.
“It was great going in with a guy that I’ve played with for a long time and always looked up to and respected, and that was Fred,” Roop said. “It was a great honor.”
Roop joined the Reds Astros team the year after it won two World Tournaments and the team moved to a USSSA (United State Specialty Sports Assoc.). They were then the only team to play in just six conference events to make the World Series.
At 47, Roop is a veteran playing a young man’s game. But his achievements continue to stand out. During his time playing Indiana ASA softball he usually played pitcher and first and third base. He hit for both power and average throughout his career, batting over .700. He earned multiple All-Tournament and MVP awards in several divisions.
“The more you progress, it’s still fun, but a lot more competitive,” Roop said. “It’s a young man’s game anymore. You play in baseball stadiums, and it’s a big stage. Fortunately, you have over-40 and over-45 and over-50 that you can progress to.”
Roop was a standout for both Columbus North High School and Wabash Valley Junior College.
He’s cutting back softball a bit while he focuses on the sports interests of his daughter Madison, 16. They’ll be travelling to Florida soon for her volleyball tournament.
Still competitive, Roop says that scaling back to the leagues like 50-over will have him playing just one weekend a month.
Roop started working at Columbus Cointainer and was there when purchased by PCA in 2016. He celebrated 25 years with the company last year.
