On Tuesday, the Delray Beach Police Department arrested Florida Atlantic University student Christian “CJ” Walden, FAU’s Boca Raton House of Representatives Ways and Means Chair, for “obscene communication – traveling to meet/lure a child using a computer.”
Walden’s booking record with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office shows his bond was set at $5,000. If convicted, he could face up to 21 months in prison, as well as mandatory registration on the state’s s*x offender registry.
Following Walden’s arrest, FAU’s Student Government Boca House Speaker, Jack Nixon, issued an “emergency House meeting” for Friday. There are two bills on the floor to remove Walden from his position, which he was just voted into in March 21.

From tour guide to front desk staff, Florida Atlantic University offers a variety of convenient on-campus jobs for students. Eager for job opportunities, some student employees say they were unaware of the limitations they agreed to when they signed their name on the dotted line.
At FAU, university policies have come under scrutiny from organizations such as the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a nonprofit that defends Americans’ First Amendment rights.
In 2019, FIRE wrote a letter requesting that FAU change its media policies, which, according to FIRE, required faculty, student employees, and student athletes to get permission from Media Relations or the Athletics Department before interviewing with the press.

While some students at Florida Atlantic University have been open to discussing their political views on campus, others express fear or hesitancy about voicing them. This issue is not only present at FAU, but nationwide on many college and university campuses.
In the fall, the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and FAU’s participation in the 287(g) agreement intensified political conversations on campus.
As political organizations at FAU share their opinions on events like these, students differ in how comfortable they feel engaging with them, with some open to discussion and others hesitant because they fear being judged by their peers.
